Americans waste an astounding amount of food - an estimated 27 percent of the food available for consumption. The numbers seem all the more staggering now, given the current cost of groceries. Excerpted from the New York Times: May 18, 2008

In other words, in 2007, an average family of four spent $5544.00 on food at home and threw away 27%, or just under $1500.00 in food. For only $95.40 ($.26 cents per day) a family of four can easily save $500.00/year or more.
